Don’t be a big fish in small pond

Get uncomfortable

Comfort is the Enemy of Progress

It's my first week back in Romania for the second half of the season, and over 80 players are here on trial. Hoping to earn a contract and launch their careers. Over the last year, I've coached over 200 players, and one common theme I've observed is a loss of confidence throughout the month because they aren't able to adapt.

Many players gain a false sense of confidence when they stay in their hometown and lack real competition. They fool themselves into thinking that the same standard will be enough to compete at the next level. But here's the truth: stay uncomfortable, get comfortable staying uncomfortable.

The Danger of Complacency

I don't believe in the idea of "maintenance" in football. If you're not progressing, you're regressing. You need to consistently surround yourself with challenges. Take Jude Bellingham, for example. At 17, he moved from Birmingham City to Dortmund, had a couple of fantastic seasons, and then recognized he'd outgrown the club. He jumped to Real Madrid and has been dominating, reaching the pinnacle at 22 by winning the Champions League.

Bellingham has been able to compete at every level because he's constantly pushed himself. He's passed every test. And that's the key: continuously seeking out challenges that push you beyond your current abilities.
